Food Pyramid / Nutrition

For the month this month I am teaching my preschooler about nutrition & the food pryamid. We are doing a weekly nutrition co-op with our homeschool group so at home I am elaborating on this study.

I had JJ sort the veggies & fruits - he told me what they were & what food group they went into.
Then with our food magnets with labels (I borrowed from our library) JJ sorted each food group into the proper group with the matching word.

Then JJ put his magnetic food pyramid puzzle together along with the correct (spoons) serving sizes you are to have a day for a healthy diet.

We left this on our refridgerator for the time being. I made worksheets called What did you eat today? for my son to do. He wrote down everything he ate on 2/9/10 then he circled yes or no if he had the correct amount of servings of food as the food pyramid calls for. He enjoyed writting down everything he ate & then looking to see if he had the correct amount of servings.

Then for each food group JJ is getting pictures out from sale ads I stockpiled just for this lesson. I have him go through the sale ads & ask him to find what belongs in a certain food group. So for example: fruits - he cuts them out, glues them on the paper & on the back of the paper he writes down particular items from this food group.

We have also utlitized Nourish Interactive quite a bit for this lesson, they have free on-line nutrition games, worksheets, etc.

  2. I love this idea! My preschooler would LOVE this project - she's quite a foodie. :)

I'm new here. I started out homeschooling full-time, and now do so half-time. I found it too difficult for me to balance everything, kids of varying ages, and do a good job everywhere. Right now I am using A Beka Curriculum as it's all spelled out for me and that works well with a hectic schedule. :)

    Thank you for sharing!

  4. This is a very comprehensive unit, and your son's writing is really impressive. He definitely learns a lot about healthy eating from these activities.

  8. Great idea with the plastic food. I hadn't thought about that. I made flashcards with food items we cut from magazines, but the sorting plastic food looks WAY more fun. Thanks for the inspiration.
