Our homeschool group got together last Friday & made square foot gardening boxes. A big thank you to a very creative fellow homeschool mom who did the class and supplied all the materials! We made the boxes from scratch from hammering and screwing the screws into the wood to form the boxes, stapling the screen mesh on the bottom, shovling the soil into the boxes to planting the seeds!
Both my boys & I are so excited about the progress of our little garden!
9/2/10 - pictures of our sprouts!
We have sweet cucumber, sunflowers & breakfast radishes!
The kids also drew faces on styrofoam cups, cut out the face shapes, put cotton balls in the bottom of the cups, sprinkled seeds on the cotton balls -- now we have a hydroponic garden! The reason for the cut outs is because the plants will grow through the openings!

We have sprouts!
For the next few weeks we will be learning about botany. Here are some of the lessons and resources we used:
Evan Moor Giant Resource Book (printables)
Seeds! Seeds! Seeds! by Nancy Elizabeht
Seeds by Ken Robbins
The Curious Garden by Peter Brown
We collected seeds from vegetables & fruits we ate during the week & made a collage then labeled them.

So awesome! I have a square foot garden myself! I was homeschooled 1st-12th grade and I loved these kinds of hands-on projects that are so much better than sitting in a classroom. =)

The hydroponic garden is kinda interesting.
ReplyDeleteI love this! What great activities! You little garden boxes look so neat and tidy. I think I will be putting your hydroponic idea on my list of science experiments. Bravo!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun week for your kids! And great activities for learning about botany. Have a great week next week!
ReplyDeleteI like the holes for the plants to grow through - that's so neat!
ReplyDeleteI like your seed collage. It really shows the differences in the seeds and how neat to use seeds from foods you eat!
ReplyDeleteVery nice lessons. We used a box very similar to yours for an archelogical dig. You could always use it as that if you get tired of gardening with it.
ReplyDeleteLove the styrofoam cup idea! Coming from science sun
ReplyDeleteOohh, love the styrofoam! We need to try that!

ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!! I do not have a 'green thumb' like my hubby does...but since winter is coming near...we just might have to do a indoor plant project. Cool!! ;)
