BABYWEARING 101 -- WHY WEAR YOUR BABY?

Why wear your baby?

 Wearing a baby is convenient.
Wearing a baby promotes physical development.
 Baby-wearing is healthy for you!
Baby-wearing helps you and your baby to communicate with each other.
Slings are a bonding tool.
Baby-wearing are a safe place for a child to be.
Baby-wearing is economical.
You can nurse your baby while wearing them!

Finding a carrier that is right for you
There are many types of baby carriers. These include adjustable slings with rings (these come padded or unpadded), pouch slings that are not adjustable, asian-style carriers, and wraps that simply tie on.

Here are some differences:
Sling: A sling is a wide piece of fabric that is worn sash-style across mom’s torso, over one of mom’s shoulders. Baby simply sits or lies inside the fabric swath in a variety of positions. Slings are incredibly comfortable for the mother to wear and allow baby to rest in his most natural positions, making slings a great place for baby to sleep. If you are a breastfeeding mother, slings make it very convenient to feed while you are out and about. Baby and mom are already in a comfortable feeding position, and both have total privacy when feeding.

Carriers: The most basic carrier consists of two straps that go around mom’s shoulder and a fabric seat that holds baby facing either inward or outward, depending on baby’s age and mom’s preference. The adjustable straps that go around your shoulders, and sometimes around your waist, help to distribute baby’s weight to make carrying more comfortable.

Here are a few examples:

I wish I had worn my 5 year old when he was a baby but as a 1st time mom and very uneducated about babywearing he was mostly held in my arms or put in the stroller. Then when our 2nd baby was born I picked up a Hotsling and feel in love with babywearing ever since! I have worn our 3rd baby and will definitely will wear our 4th baby! Here are a few pictures of me babywearing!

I hope this post was helpful and you will give babywearing a try - it's a wonderful experience!

  1. I've always worn my babes == in fact I could not make it through my day NOT wearing them. :)

  2. I wore my first in a carrier for 9 months until we bought a stroller during the summer. The carrier never fit me properly, being 5'2" and 120 pounds (Wow, that sounds huge to me, a metric user, and got too hot in summer. Because of this I never tried carrying my second as she was due in may, plus my mother bought me a VERY fancy pram!
This time round the pram is up in the attic and the slings are on the wishlist. I also found carrying baby helps you get back into shape much faster!

  9. Awesome and informative post, especially for new Moms!!! I loved wearing all of my babies but it was definitely overwhelming at first trying to figure out what kind of carrier to use because there are SO many!!! My Bella Baby Carrier ended up being my favorite :)

  11. I definitely agree with convenient! My son didn't like being worn until he was big enough to face out though! A few weeks ago I wore him at the mall even though he's 35 pounds now!

  13. I am definately a baby wearer:) I love to have my little one close..and they are so much more content..AND you can get more done. Was also great for nursing:) I could only wear them though until about 6 months..then my back would start to hurt too much.

  15. There are so many carriers to choose from that I am sure it gets very confusing for new parents to figure out which one to get and how to use them. I tried one once and totally understand why mom's love them.

  21. I always used one when my son was a baby, they were the best. He was always happier and I could move around and do more putting him in a sling. I used a carrier and a sling and I loved them both!
