Not much to post about our homeschool week. We did do a really cool science observation. My husband brought home a huge avocado. Not sure why he brought it home because we do not eat them, but happy he did. As it sat on our kitchen counter for about a week & I decided to toss is in the preserve directly behind our home knowing that some sort of animal would eat it.
A few days later the kids & I were in the preserve area and I noticed the avocado was eaten but the skin and seeds of it were left behind. So what ate it? This is where the learning began!
The avocado seed was split in 1/2 and scattered, 1/2 was by the tree & the other 1/2 where my son is in the picture.
So we observed these items, I asked my 5 year old a series of questions:
1) What do you think could have broken the seed?
2) We also found animal dung, going to the zoo quite a bit & seeing bird dung on the railings. Could the animal that ate the avocado left behind the dung?
After observing these 2 things his answer was a bird! I think he was right!
This is what I LOVE about homeschooling - learning from elements from everyday life!
Wow sounds like a fun and great way to learn new things. It's a great tip even for those who aren't homeschooling. I think people sometimes are too busy to see how many learning opportunities are in front of them. They are all around us we just don't take the time to notice.

Isn't it exciting when you can turn every day life into learning. We are trying to sprout an avocado seed right now.
ReplyDeleteKathi Still trying to figure out science for my 3rd grader.
Great spur-of-the-moment lesson! Oh, I love avacodos! How could you not eat it? :)
ReplyDeleteThat does sound like a pretty cool lesson.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great observation! Thanks for sharing!
