APOLOGIA SWIMMING CREATURES SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS

Over the weekend we completed lesson 1 - Apologia Swimming Creatures
(The below experiments were taken directly out of the curriculum itself)
Thankfully my husband will be doing most of the science experiments with the kids this year! He enjoys science so I volunteered him!

1st Experiment:
Pressure on lungs

materials needed:
small balloon
2 liter bottle

Hold balloon in bottle upside down so the top of the balloon and the opening of the balloon is sticking out of the bottle opening.

As you dive deeper, the pressure on your body increases, just like this balloon. your lungs get smaller!

Stepping on the bottle stimulates what happens to your lungs when you dive down into depths of the ocean.
 2nd Experiment
What is heavier cold or hot water?

materials needed:
food coloring 2 different colors
hot and cold water
large clear bowl
little cup (styrofoam or dixie cup)

1st time dropping food coloring into cold water, then using hot water dropping the food coloring in - we found the the cold water was heavier because the 2 colors did not mix, they stayed seperated once both colors were but in the container together.

  1. Interesting, I would have though the mixing occurred because the molecules in the hot water are moving faster than those of the cold water... I wouldn't think that the temp of the water would have effected its weight??

  2. I love their simple but effective experiments! We are using their Anatomy book this year and have loved the experiments. Tomorrow we are cutting open a chicken bone to study the inside and also see how our joints work.

  5. Oh, I remember these from a couple of years ago. We're finally getting around to doing Astronomy this year and the kids can't wait. (We've completed Zoo I-III and Botany.) Fun stuff! Stoppin' by from Kris's Weekly Wrap-up!

  7. It has been several years since we used Zoo 2 - it was my favorite of all the Zoo books.

  8. I am loving reading others posts on Apologia. This is our first year using some of their curriculum and we are enjoying it thoroughly. We are going to start Anatomy in a few weeks, Lord's willing.
