SCIENCE EXPERIMENT: WHICH FREEZES SALT WATER OR REGULAR WATER?

We just wrapped up our lesson 2 from Apologia Swim Creatures (baleen + toothed whales).  We did an experiment on which freezes faster salt water or regular water. Sometimes beluga whales can be found below 32 degrees but they are not frozen.

Materials needed:
2 cups
salt
freezer

In 1 cup add 2 tablespoons of salt w/ water & stir
The other cup add just water
put both in the freezer

The 1st hour

Left salt water (slushy)  Right the regular water was frozen quite a bit

Checking the water from being in the freezer over night
Left salt water still slushy, Right completely frozen
We were even able to pour the salty water out of the cup because it wasn't frozen
The salt water took longer to freeze because salt lowers the freezing temperature of water.

This experiment was taken directly from Apologia Swimming Creatures curriculum.

  1. This is a great experiment to tie into lessons about sea creatures! I'm thinking of doing a unit about the ocean soon and I'll definitely use this - thank you!:)

  2. Fun experiment. You should follow it up with a Slushie Magic. The salt water in the "magic cubes" is so cold that it causes the other liquid to freeze on contact. My MIL got one and the grandkids LOVE it! (ps. I don't have any connection to slushie magic, I just think it's cool) :)

  3. Hi Nicole-

My 3 year old loves water so I try to do some craft projects with him each week that are centered around it. I cannot believe we haven't done a project like this. He is going to love it! Thank you for sharing.
