Sorry I haven't posted any Apologia 5th Day Swimming Creatures posts lately. We got behind in lesson 4. Christmas and New Years we were a bit more relaxed, finally we have completed lesson 4 -- Aquatic Herps!
We went to a local turtle rehabilitation to get more of a hands on experience.
This Loggerhead Sea Turtle was eating conch
These next 2 pictures are of baby sea turtles that were found on the beach This sea turtle is hooked up to medication (the yellow box) due to an injury.
We ended our lesson with one of the experiments. To understand how a frog's skin can absorb oxygen.
Materials needed:
vanilla
balloon
box
We dropped 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla in the balloon, tied it and then put it in a food storage container for 30 minutes. The result was that originally the balloon just smelled like latex but after the 30 minutes was over you could smell the vanilla that absorbed from the balloon.
thanks for info and then i like the picture
ReplyDeleteI am considering using Apologia next year. I'd love to start with Zoology 2- sea creatures because I think my kids would enjoy it more than the birds in Zoology 1. Did you do Zoology 1 first or jump straight into Zoology 2?
ReplyDeleteShaky Mommy - This was out 1st year using this curriculum. I started with this one because I knew it would interest my son. I already bought next year's curriculum - Flying Creatures and plan on using it for my oldest who will be in 2nd grade and with my 5 year old who will start kindgarten. :)

ReplyDeleteOh this reminds me of the turtle hospital we used to go to in the keys! I just found your blog (through the someday crafts giveaway directory) and am so excited, because we are thinking about homeschooling, and this is one of the reasons why--hands-on learning!
ReplyDeletefun experiment looks like fun seeing and learning about the turtles
ReplyDeleteThanks for the information! I was concerned that I would need to start with flying creatures and wasn't sure that would pull my kids in like the sea creatures would! But now that I know it worked well for you, I feel good about going ahead with sea creatures! I'll definitely be visiting your blog more to get some ideas about activities once I have the curriculum in hand! Thanks!
