I typically wouldn't post something like this on my blog but after I saw the story on the news this morning I was sickened so much so by it that I felt compelled to write about it.
New York City yesterday when a 58-year-old man was pushed to his death in front of an oncoming train. Witnesses said Ki-Suk Han was shoved after a brief argument with a man who had been seen talking to himself moments earlier. The train driver was unable to stop in time. After being pushed, "he gets back on his feet,” a police source says "He’s waving to the train, ‘Stop! Stop!’ He tries to climb up onto the platform and the train hits him."
News reports say that several witnesses were treated at the scene for shock and trauma. I can understand the shock and the trauma that these poor people had after witnessing such a horrific murder. But I ask why didn't someone help him? The victim has hanging onto he platform ledge if 2 people were to take each of this man's hands maybe this father and husband would still be alive! How could anyone just stand there and watch the on-coming subway and a helpless man screaming for help and do nothing? Where is the humanity???
Then to top it all off a local photographer, Umar Abbasi, who was waiting to catch the subway took pictures of the whole crime unfolding. He watched as the victim screamed and yelled for help and all he could muster up in response was to take pictures? His claim was that he took the pictures to help the man. That the flash of the camera would make the subway driver stop the train. Look at this picture, how would have the driver been able to stop that close? Where is the humanity I ask again?
I post this because how often are we wrapped up in our own business and we do not stop and help those around us? I am sure if it was one of our friends or family members we would have done everything in our power to help pull them out to safety. Now this man's children do not have a father and his wife is a widow. Why couldn't someone help? I understand that the shock could have prevented people from helping, but everyone?
I am reminded of the parable in the Bible of the Good Samaritan:
Luke 10:30-37
In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’ “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”
Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”
This whole story has made me stop and evaluate myself, am I too busy to help? The answer at times is unfortunately yes. How about you?
I know this time of the year we get caught up in shopping, decorating, etc. but we need to stop and look around and see where we can help. There are so many around us that need our help, what can you do?
Oh my, how terrible. He was trying to help by taking pictures..Why did no one help? It must have happened very quickly, but still.
ReplyDeleteThings like this make me so sick to my stomach. Sometimes I get mad and throw things, but I can't imagine being so angry that I actually harm/kill someone else. We're lost as a species. If we die out it's because we're killing each other...
ReplyDeleteOMG that is horrific! I saw the photog on the Today Show trying to explain his actions. It's just despicable behavior.
ReplyDeleteI read this story also and what first made me wonder---usually in NYC Someone will help--why no one did is a mystery to me--as far as I am concerned those pics should be confiscated and burned and the camera taken away from the picture taker!!
ReplyDeleteI was reading about this yesterday however I hadn't seen a picture. It saddens me to hear that there were people who were witness enough to be treated for shock but weren't able to help the man. I can't say why people didn't help - maybe they were scared or frozen in fear - but this does seem like something that could have been avoided. I totally agree that we should all strive to be has caring and helpful as the Good Samaritan. Averting our eyes from pain doesn't make it go away, but doing something to stop the pain, will.
ReplyDeleteI was just reading about that. It's sickening. When Obama got re-elected, I gave up on all humanity. What the heck is wrong with people?
ReplyDeleteThat man could have been saved or at least people could have tried. Sick!
This is a very sad story, it is such a shame that NO ONE tried to help.
ReplyDeleteWow! How very sad...Someone should have helped him.
ReplyDeleteWe learned about this in ethics class. Look up Kitty Genovese. This has sadly been the way for a long time.
ReplyDeleteSeveral years ago, I was working drive thru at a bank. Someone told me that I had a car coming around. I waited and waited. I saw the car right before the entrance to the drive thru. Someone went to check him--the manager and another teller. I remember the girl saying she didn't want to catch anything from trying CPR (I didn't weigh enough to do it myself). The man died. That day has haunted me ever since.
What is wrong with people? No one seems to care about anyone but themselves anymore. How horrible for his family!
ReplyDeleteThis story is so, so sad. Research has shown that when there is a group of people, it is actually less likely that someone will help because everyone assumes/hopes someone else will do it. That is why people who do step in to help truly are heroes. And we need more of them!
ReplyDeleteJenny, I'm not sure how political views affect our willingness to help others? I have friends of various political persuasions who are equally generous and kind.
You ask a very good question. This could have been a preventable accident.
ReplyDeleteI herad about this and I can't get it out of my head. How terrible!!
ReplyDeleteGives me chills.
ReplyDeleteI hope that some of the people there will make different decisions in the future. I feel for his family.
Thanks for reminding me that I need to be aware and help others.

That story just made me sick! :(
ReplyDeleteI know it's easy to get caught up in our own lives, but I can't imagine doing that with the life of another human being!
This was so crazy!! So hard to even read and talk about. AWFUL!
ReplyDeleteOh my,I am just sick to my stomach over this. Seriously; no one could spare a moment to help him? Put down the freakin' camera and help him! His life is worth more than a stupid photo. Oh I'm so sickened by it.
ReplyDeleteON a side note; you are right. Many times we just get so wrapped up in our own world we don't think to see what really is important and forget to help others. Definitely something we can all take a moment to evaluate how we are doing.
I also saw this on the news and was horrified! How can anyone NOT have helped?! And now thanks to the thoughtless photographer it's recorded history. I'm so sorry for his family.
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard this story yet on the news, but I don't typically watch the news so I am not surprised. IT is sad that no one helped him at all. I know when I lived in DC, I had a great fear of the Metro because if you fell you could be electrocuted. Unfortunately, there are mentally ill or just plain evil people everywhere, and there will never be a way to understand the way people treat others in my opinon
ReplyDeleteI don't know why no one helped him. I would have left my kids standing alone to go help him. I would have. I might have asked someone to watch them for a minute, maybe another mom. But I would have ran to help him. That's just me.
ReplyDeleteI even helped a mom with her 3 year old son who was trying to get her attention and act up in the post office the other day. I just stopped and bent down to talk to him. I had my 3 year old daughter and 5 month old with me, and it only too a few minutes of my time to keep him out of trouble. He was so cute, and so happy that we stopped to say hi to him.
Wow, this really saddens me. I had not heard about this. I personally feel that every person there is a part of this since like you said, they stood by and did nothing. I am sickens that society thinks so little of others. This poor man and his family. I am sending my prayers. I would be ashamed if I was the photographer. To make a profit and name out of a persons horrific death. Sad.
ReplyDeleteOh Lord! This is terrible! I hadn't heard about it until I read this! HOW could no body try to help?? HOW! And to be aware enough to take a picture, but not run to help? I would have dropped everything and done whatever I could to at least TRY! You are so unfortunately correct when you ask "Where is the humanity?" Unfortunately it is disappearing quickly. So very, very sad.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you wrote about this. I watch (or just listen) to the news during nap time every day and this story was all they talked about. I just keep thinking in my head, "why didn't anyone help him back up!?!" and I was wondering what I would have done if I was there. I really think I would have helped him and not just stood there! I just do not understand!
ReplyDeleteIt saddens me that moments like that no longer shock me. There was a point that it amazed me how rude, selfish, ignorant, etc... that people could be about the people around them. As a parent, I just keep focusing on raising my kids to care about others and the environment. I still have hope for the future!
ReplyDeleteIt is scary that things like this happen so much it doesn't seem to shock people.
ReplyDeleteThere are at least four shootings in the town near us every night.
Sad that things have gotten this bad...
