My 2 boys and I have been learning about Martin Luther King Jr. (Martin Luther King Day is Monday 1/21).
Both boys did a lapbook. I pieced the lapbook together using various different resources:
We checked out the following books at the library for our study:
Both my boys drew Martin Luther King Jr. for the front overs of their lapbooks
(ages 7 and 5)
Inside one of the lapbooks
Then we did a craft - the hands are different ethnicity's reaching out to each other
Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream so we titled the craft this.
Art supplies needed:
Colored construction paper,
brown, white and black paint
Sharpie
Paint brushes
The kids pained their hands and pressed them to the construction paper so that the hands were touching and once dried they wrote I Have a Dream....
While my 5 year old didn't want to add anything to I Have a Dream but my 7 year old did, camping! Not quite what I was hoping he would write but at 7 that's what's on his mind!

Great resources! I always liked to read My Brother Martin to my students. They enjoyed hearing about him from his sister's point of view.

That is so awesome!!! As a former history teacher I officially love it!:)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea. How do you think of all of this? I am truly amazed!
ReplyDeleteI like the pic with the three hand prints depicting different races--it will take a few more years for even your 7 year old to totally grasp the concept of "I Have a Dream" but you have given them all a good start.
ReplyDeleteThis is not something we teach a lot at home, but I know they devote a whole month to it at school. I know the kids had a large time, though making great books!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing so many awesome Martin Luther King resources! And thanks for hosting Link & Learn. I pinned your post to my Kids' Martin Luther King Day Activities Board at http://pinterest.com/debchitwood/kids-martin-luther-king-day-activities/
ReplyDeleteWonderful. 14 years ago my husband and I were in Montgomery AL. and went to the Church he preached at. It was an amazing time for us. Martin Luther King Jr. was an incredible person and I'm glad to see you teaching your kids about him.
ReplyDeleteWhat great activities! I didn't know that Monday was Martin Luther King Jr. Day! Thanks for the reminder!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!!!
ReplyDeleteAwesome!!! I swore I bought a big box of those kinds of folders just for lapbooks but I cannot find them anywhere!!! Maybe I didn't buy them... I blame pregnancy brain. *sigh*
ReplyDeleteAnyway definitely love this! My eldest daughter was obsessed with MLK last year.
Great resources for MLK. It has inspired me to do a lesson on Mon. Thanks! Hopping over from Weekly Wrap Up
ReplyDeleteI love the drawing for MLK on the front of the lap books. And hardly ever get the "feeling" of what we are trying to get to them to see do they??? Camping, my 7 year might have said "I dream to go horseback riding or to get a dog"
ReplyDeleteThank you for the link up! Great lesson!
Thank you for hosting!! We also did a unit on MLK this week and we ALL learned so much!! Y
