I write this post to all my fellow bloggers. This week I was cyber bullied by one of my giveaway winners. After blogging for 5 years I was shocked that someone could treat a blogger as I have been treated. I will not mention the bullies name but I will tell you what happened and how you can protect yourself as a blogger.
I had a giveaway that ended June 26th, I had e-mailed the winner and told her she had won. I then forwarded her information to my sponsor who by the way had to go through a public relations company for the giveaway before the winner would get her prize. Then 2 weeks ago the winner instant messaged me on Facebook telling me she hasn't received her giveaway at that point it was only 3 weeks that the giveaway had ended. So I asked her to give it another week. A week went by and she instant messaged me again at this point it was 4 weeks and I did not respond, I know myself giveaways take time to process but I figured she would receive the giveaway soon.
I woke up Tuesday morning to find that the winner was leaving me nasty comments on all my social media and e-mailing me. She left a comment underneath a new giveaway on my blog and on Facebook slamming me that I had time to post new giveaways but no time to take care of her giveaway. In her instant message on my Facebook she claimed she was waiting 6 weeks for her giveaway but if you do the math it was only 4 weeks. Then she told me it was like a slap in the face because I did not return her last IM and then she told me I wasn't very Christian like. She goes on to say I am unprofessional and if I do not respond she will post it on her Facebook page.
After a nasty comments under a new giveaway on my blog, Facebook, several e-mails and tweeting that I do not get back with her and shame on me. I decided to get the sponsor involved. I e-mailed the sponsor who and they decided to e-mail her with an update. Normally I would never give my giveaway winner my sponsor's information but in this case the sponsor e-mailed her which at this point I was happy they did.
I do take giveaways seriously. Bloggers can only do so much following the protocols, forwarding the information to the sponsor and yes if the ball was dropped somewhere in the process. In this case the ball was not dropped. I had an very impatient winner on my hands that was not going to leave me alone and took every measure to bad mouth me on not just my social media but her social media too.
After blogging for 5 years and working so hard to where I have gotten I refuse to allow someone to throw all that away and to tarnish my reputation. We have to protect our work, how?
Here are a few tips to protect yourself from cyber bullying:
1) Always monitor your blog comments.
2) Be careful who you approve on Facebook if you have the Friend Request option.
3) Respond to giveaway winners even if you have nothing new to tell them about the status of their prize.
4) On ALL giveaways note that turn around time is 6-8 weeks.
4) On ALL giveaways note that turn around time is 6-8 weeks.
5) If you find a post on your Facebook timeline you can hide it or even report it if it's not appropriate by clicking the error in the upper right of the post.
6) Facebook has an option to block an user and disable the reader from seeing any of your posts. In my case this is what I did. (which my winner had much to say about that too)
7) As bloggers we need to look out for one another.

8) Never act out of haste, give yourself a cooling down time and then respond to someone who is bullying, remember to always give them grace too!
Wow! I am going to use your tips!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you had this experience, it's always a shame to hear people can't treat others with respect.
ReplyDeleteWow, I am sorry you had to go through that. Thank you for sharing your experience so we can all learn from it.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry you had to go through this. Some people don't understand how the process works, therefore they think it is all easy and quick. Hope it all got squared out.
ReplyDeleteYikes! I would add a disclaimer letting winners know it could take 4-6 weeks (or whatever) so then when it arrives fast they are more than happy about it.
ReplyDeleteSorry this happened to you.
Great tips! I just don't understand people sometimes. The internet makes it so easy to bully people because you don't have to say anything face to face!
ReplyDeleteWow, that is horrable. I had a problem this past year with a sponsor not sending out the giveaway prize. Luckily my winner was very nice about it even though it took me 8 months to get her prize to her. The rep stopped responding so finally I found another rep with the company and contacted them, they took care of it.
ReplyDeleteAfter that I made a point to put either on the giveaway or in the winners email that I am not responsible for shipping the prize. (If I am not) and to allow 6-8 weeks for delivery. At that point if they don't get their prize I'm made too!
Yeesh. Sorry you had to go through that! Thanks for the tips; I'm sure other bloggers will find this helpful like I did.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you had such a bad experience. I've been quite lucky with my sponsors and winners lately. I've also learned to be very picky with who I work with for giveaways.
ReplyDeleteGreat tips! Thank you for sharing!

ReplyDeleteWow, so sorry you had to deal with that. Thanks so much for the tips. So sad we live in a world were people are just so darn mean.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry you had to deal with that. These are great tips though. I hope I never have to deal with that type of a person, but deep down I figure I will at some point. It is so sad that people feel the need to behave that way. It's like a giant cyber tantrum.
ReplyDeleteThat's too bad. I've had some impatient winners too, although none that nasty. It always amazes me how rude people can be. :(
ReplyDeletesorry this happened...great tips
ReplyDeleteOh no I am so sorry to hear you went through this :( some people seem to think things should arrive that instant so hard.
ReplyDeleteStay strong and thank you for the tips :) x
Wow! Sorry you had to deal with this! That is just crazy! Thanks for the tips!
ReplyDeleteUm wow! I can't believe anyone would get that upset. It takes time to receive a prize. I have one company that I work with that I know takes 8-10 weeks to mail prizes. I think it sucks but then again, that's life right? You're right though, people are more understanding when they know it will take a long time.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry you went through this also! I was bullied constantly in grade & middle school before cyber bullying ever existed. At least there are ways to deal with them now. I happened to see your tweet regarding your article today and came right over to read it. I see that some here have mentioned posting a disclaimer. I think that is an excellent idea! I saw another blogger has done just that and has a very thorough disclaimer posted with every giveaway.
ReplyDeleteThese are great tips! I can't believe you had to deal with all that though. It sucks when companies take a long time to fulfill, but that's not your fault. We do everything we can to make sure our winners get their stuff, but we can't exactly make it our sole life mission, you know?
ReplyDeleteThis makes me crazy!! I'm so sorry this happened to you. I hate situations like this. I remember the first time I had an incident where I was bullied and I just cried. And it's true, you really just want to rage at the person but the cool down time is very important. You gave some pretty great tips that we all need to use! Thanks for sharing and I hope you're feeling better about things! I sure do love your blog!!! :) Alli @ Cupcake Diaries
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry you had to deal with this, it's really not fair. And truthfully, this situation is also common sense and the winner should have understand how things work. You gave some great tips, thanks for sharing. I have been bullied through my blog and FB fan page, but it was just some random crazy person - not a follower. It's very stressful, that's for sure!
ReplyDeleteI've had my share of impatient winners, but none like this. Glad the sponsor got involved and contacted the winner! Thanks for the tips!
ReplyDeleteI have had a crazy or two on my giveaways. I think it comes with the territory, especially ones who have had bad experiences in the past. They get all panicked and think they are not going to get yet another prize and get aggressive and bully, which is not the proper way to handle it. Unfortunately, it happens a lot to winners. I enter giveaways and had FOUR bloggers lie to me this week alone regarding my prize that never came. They don't realize I am a blogger and know the PR reps they are working with for the giveaway. You would be amazed just how many bloggers, who seem genuine online, are actually unethical. I have a long list on my desktop of bloggers who I will not work with or have stolen my work. I am in no way defending your winners behavior but I can understand how some of them get nuts about this stuff.
ReplyDeleteWow, I'm so sorry you went through that :( How awful.
ReplyDeleteThank you for this post :) Just giving you a post of love and gratitude for all the time and effort into your blog. We readers, appreciate you even though we sometimes don't voice it. Sorry about the recent rotten apple in our bunch :)
