I have seen several different sensory bins on other blogs but I wanted something I could use all year long adding holiday items to, homeschool related items to, etc. So when a friend of mine (thank you Jackie!) showed me her rice sensory box she uses with her 2 younger children. So I decided to make my own. So off to the geocery store to buy my 20lb bag of rice and to the Dollar Tree for items to go along with it.
I must say it was the best $12.00 I spent!
My kids (5, 3 & 1 years old) LOVE it!
Items I added to the box:
3 pc funnel set (Dollar Tree)
7 pc measuring cups and spoons (Dollar Tree)
small heart containers with lids
empty water bottles
(a blanket or something for underneath it beacause it's messy!)
a large bin to put the rice in w/ lid
Teaches:
Pouring
Scrunch their fingers and grab hand fulls of the rice
Great for texture sensory
Measuring
Scooping

I've totally been wanting to create a sensory bin for a while now. I should just bite the bullet and get it done :)
ReplyDeleteI also need to start doing sensory bins more. The only one I've done this year was also my first attempt when we did the letter D and I used shredded newspaper and noodles.

thanks for the great idea! just got all the supplies including the little heart shaped plastic containers. we are pretty desperate for new activities. : )
ReplyDeleteI have a small rice bin, and I colored the rice, the kids love it! I split it between a couple of ziplocks, added a little alcohol and food coloring and laid it on a cookie sheet to dry. It looks pretty, plus when they get tired of it I plan to use it for craft projects. A little rice glitter anyone? :)
ReplyDeleteI work at a preschool and we have sensory tables all the time. I am the assistant but I copy the teacher's ideas at home all the time. During the holidays I found a bag of the fake snow that you can use for a Christmas village display on sale at a thrift store for a quarter. I had the container the hospital sends you home with after having a baby. I filled it with the snow. Then I found a baggie of foam shapes like snowflakes, trees, ornaments,etc at Dollar Tree. They were dusted with glitter so very eye appealing to kids. I put those in with the snow and gave the kids clean yogurt and fruit cocktail snack containers to sort the "treasures" into. They loved it! Cheap entertainment.
