DO YOU HOMESCHOOL ALL YEAR LONG, WHAT IS YOUR SUMMER LIKE?

I had originally planned on homeschooling all year long but I decided we needed a bit of a break! We will be homeschooling but LIGHTLY! Why? Two reasons, my son complains about homeschooling so if I completely take a break than I think he will be in shock when I were to start back up and the other reason is because I want him to work on the basics (handwriting and reading).

So here's our summer:

~ LOTS of playdates with friends (pool, field trips, park, playdates at our homes, etc.)

~Lots of nature studies, my son is getting good at catching lizards and loves nature so why not explore and learn about it at the same time? Our homeschool group is doing a week this month & next month & just going to the nature centers. So I will have my son bring is journal and write and draw about what he learned.

We are using 2 great nature books: Florida Audobon and Nature Handbook.

~ For handwriting we are finishing up our Handwriting Without Tears book. We finished up the book but I am having my son go back and write all the words at the bottom of each page for practice and have them read them to me.

~ Reading, we belong to 2 reading programs (1 at our library and the other Barnes & Noble.). So most of my readers are from the library.

~ Bible - I am borrowing Character Traits coloring book & songs from a friend accompanied by other books and doing a complete character building lesson for the summer. Along with character building activities.

What is your summer like so far?

  1. We are doing school this summer too. Kind of similar to your plan. We are working on a nature study, focusing a lot on trees. Also, we went through our math kind of slowly this year so the concepts would really sink in and will be finishing up our math book this summer. Lots and lots ant lots of reading, trips to the beach, zoo and children's museum.

  2. Hey Nicole. Happy Summer to you. We are schooling all year long also, but lightly. I think I'm going to start full speed ahead in August. By the way, I have that character trait coloring book. I haven't used it yet. Maybe I will do it this summer. Talk to you soon. Hopefully, we can get together this summer.

  3. We opted to homeschool year round but instead of using curriculum books, we are doing unit studies, summer reading program (through Masterbooks), an art curriculum (Artistic Pursuits) and basically more hands-on fun! We are going to Peru July 18-30 on short term mission work so that will be our summer break! Hope you have a great summer!

  5. We homeschool but go lightly for the summer. I think all kids need a break. We use teaching opportunities more than anything rather than structure during the summer.

  6. Sounds like a very good summer plan. If you can keep up with the reading, that makes the transition back to "school" easier and I really like your ideas for character building activities...nothing more important in my opinion than building character! Have a great summer!!!

  7. We're working on "weak areas" this summer 2-3 days per week as well as participating in 2 summer reading programs, going to the lake OFTEN, going to camps, and gardening. We're really about enjoying our summer with flexibility, less running around, and LOTS OF SWIMMING. Stopping by from Weekly Wrap-up!

  8. Sounds great. We love the break. Andrew does, especially. But I am sneaking some stuff in there. We will also do some tests (to keep up on their math mostly) for fun prizes I have!

  9. Looking good! We school year round, but definitely lighter in the summer. We are basically wrapping up the things we haven't finished. :)
